The cars of Scuderia del Portello, equipped with the driving system for people with disabilities, will be endorsing mobility without barriers in the world of motorsport and automotive heritage.
Since 1982 Scuderia del Portello has been the Alfa Romeo sports brand, bringing a travelling museum of historic Alfa Romeo racing cars to the most prestigious events in the world.
Clay Regazzoni, former F1 driver who became paraplegic following an accident at the Long Beach circuit in 1980, wanted the Alfa Romeo 1900 of Scuderia del Portello to be prepared for him to compete in the 2002 edition of the Carrera Panamericana racing event in Mexico (the car had already participated in the race in 1954, 1990 and 1991).
Clay Regazzoni’s pioneering initiative opened the doors of historic motorsport to people with disabilities.
The car, which had been significantly damaged as a result of veering off road, was restored and newly prepared by Scuderia del Portello with a Guidosimplex driving system to make its debut at the 2020 edition of 1000 Miglia as a guest car.
1000 Miglia S.r.l. and the Camozzi Group (Clay Regazzoni’s long-standing sponsor) contributed to the restoration and preservation of this unique car.
This project goes beyond the field of historic motorsport: 27-year-old Mattia Ziletti, a native of Brescia who lives in Riccione, made his debut in the first race of the 2020 championship Coppa Italia Turismo on the Imola circuit driving an Alfa Romeo 147 wearing the Portello colours and finishing third in his class.
Having become quadriplegic at a very young age due to an illness, Mattia embarked on a long path of physical conditioning to obtain the CSAI competition license. His beloved Alfa Romeo 147 was prepared by Mirco Righi with a special driving system patented by Guidosimplex.
The President of Scuderia del Portello commented: “I admire Mattia for his courage: he continues along Clay Regazzoni’s legacy in motorsport as an outstanding spokesperson for the new generations and showing around the Alfa Romeo brand with his great passion”.
